An Icon of Martinborough

Founded in 1979 by Dr Neil and Dawn McCallum, Dry River was one of the pioneering estates of Martinborough and helped establish the region as one of New Zealand's great homes of Pinot Noir.

From the beginning, the Dry River philosophy has centred around low yields, concentration, structure, purity and longevity.

These are wines made not simply to impress in their youth, but to evolve and develop complexity over many years in bottle.

That ability to age is precisely what makes this vertical so special.

The producer remains the same. The grape remains Pinot Noir. The vineyards and winemaking philosophy provide the common thread.

What changes is the vintage — and time.

Beginning with the mature 2011 and finishing with the youthful 2022, this collection allows you to experience twelve different growing seasons and more than a decade of evolution.

The older wines have moved beyond youthful primary fruit towards increasingly complex, savoury and tertiary characters, while the younger vintages retain greater freshness, fruit, structure and energy.

2011 Dry River Pinot Noir

Mature, complex and beautifully evolved.

Dry River describes 2011 as close to a classic vintage, with favourable flowering followed by a long Indian-style autumn.

With age, the wine has evolved towards dried strawberry, cherry compote, liquorice, aniseed and dried herbs, together with cedar, marzipan and biscotti. The tannins have matured and softened, revealing increasingly complex savoury and tertiary characters while retaining impressive underlying structure.

Bob Campbell MW described it as a seriously good, pure and varietal Pinot Noir with excellent ageing potential.

2012 Dry River Pinot Noir

A fascinating mature vintage within the vertical.

Now with well over a decade of bottle age, the 2012 provides an intriguing bridge between the mature 2011 and the more structured vintages that follow.

Its place within the collection allows you to experience another stage in the evolution of mature Dry River Pinot Noir and compare it directly with both older and younger expressions.

2013 Dry River Pinot Noir

Dark, savoury and beautifully structured.

Classic Dry River aromas of Christmas spice, pipe tobacco and plum are joined by elegant red berry and raspberry characters.

The palate is juicy, sappy and concentrated, with dense fruit, fine tannin and focused acidity carrying the wine through a long finish.

At release, Dry River anticipated renewed interest after three to five years and full maturity after eight to ten years, putting this bottle at a particularly fascinating stage of its evolution today.

2014 Dry River Pinot Noir

98 Points – Bob Campbell

A powerful and structured expression of Dry River, with blackcurrant and blackberry, floral characters and subtle nutty oak.

The palate combines considerable fruit density with firm structure and acidity.

Bob Campbell awarded the wine an exceptional 98 points, highlighting its intensity, velvety texture, sweet cherry, spice, plum and violet characters and its remarkable potential for development in bottle.

That decade of bottle age has now passed.

2015 Dry River Pinot Noir

Concentrated, structured and age-worthy.

Cherry blossom and violets meet blackcurrant, raspberry, spice, dried leaves and cardamom, with a subtle chocolate and hazelnut character from French oak.

Low yields produced impressive concentration, with ripe plum and Christmas spice carried by elegant, chalky tannins.

Wine Advocate described the 2015 as concentrated and age-worthy, with black cherry fruit, freshness and a long, rich finish.

2016 Dry River Pinot Noir

96 Points – James Suckling

A beautifully evolving Dry River showing plum, stewed rhubarb and cherry, alongside more mature notes of forest floor, fallen leaves, dark toast, bark, dried thyme and iodine.

The palate is becoming softer and increasingly approachable while retaining lively tannin and acidity.

James Suckling awarded the wine 96 points, praising its precision, exceptional length and combination of power and finesse.

2017 Dry River Pinot Noir

A fascinating midpoint in the collection.

The 2017 sits at an intriguing stage between the increasingly mature older vintages and the more youthful wines that follow.

It provides an important transition within the vertical and helps demonstrate exactly what makes tasting twelve consecutive vintages so compelling: watching the same wine move through different stages of its life.

2018 Dry River Pinot Noir

97 Points – Rebecca Gibb MW, Vinous

2018 was one of the warmest vintages on record, yet Dry River harvested early to retain freshness and acidity.

A beautiful aromatic combination of cherry blossom, violets and lilies is joined by plum, boysenberry, liquorice and subtle toasted-almond characters.

The palate is generous and plush, with rounded tannins balanced by refreshing acidity and impressive length.

Rebecca Gibb MW awarded it 97 points, praising its depth, freshness, precision and completeness. Dry River expected the wine to continue gaining interest over a further decade.

2019 Dry River Pinot Noir

96 Points – Bob Campbell MW

A late spring frost reduced yields across the vineyards by approximately 30%, followed by a warm summer and benign autumn.

The resulting wine has impressive depth and complexity, with cherry, blueberry, cassis, blackberry and tamarillo, followed by graphite, dark chocolate, char, thyme and sage.

Supple tannins frame generous fruit, while gentle acidity provides freshness and balance.

Dry River predicted that the complexity of the vintage would really begin to bloom after five to eight years of age, making its inclusion in this vertical particularly exciting today.

2020 Dry River Pinot Noir

The beginning of the younger chapter of the vertical.

The 2020 provides the opportunity to move away from the mature characteristics of the earlier wines and experience Dry River at a younger stage of development.

It is this contrast — youth against maturity, primary fruit against tertiary complexity — that makes the collection so compelling.

2021 Dry River Pinot Noir

Youth, structure and potential.

Still firmly on the youthful side of its evolution, the 2021 offers a fascinating contrast to the older vintages.

Taste it alongside the 2011 and you have two Dry River Pinot Noirs separated by a decade, providing a remarkable perspective on how these wines develop with time.

2022 Dry River Pinot Noir

The youngest chapter of the collection.

The 2022 completes this twelve-vintage journey and provides the youthful counterpoint to the mature wines at the beginning of the vertical.
