Ox Hardy Upper Tintara Shiraz McLaren Vale 2023

$27.00

A classic expression of Blewitt Springs Shiraz. Thanks to its elevation in the upper hills of McLaren Vale, Blewitt Springs Shiraz has a distinctive freshness that you don’t find on the valley floor. The famous ironstone soils of our region result in wines with great depth and richness. Dad called it ‘ferruginous’, like Guinness, it’s good for you. We’ll drink to that.

2023 was a cool growing season with wet periods leading up to harvest.

Sourced from twenty-year-old vines in one of my favourite parts of the vineyard. The fruit was left to ferment in open top fermenters, with a small portion of whole bunch (2-3%), with daily plunging down. It was then transferred to old and new oak barrels (10%) for 15 months maturation.

The 2023 shows the uniqueness of the Upper Tintara ironstone terroir that UTV sits on. Terroir shines through in this wine and provides a unique tannin structure that carries the bright fruit.

Tasting Notes

Dark fruits and red fruits on the palate, fleshy mid palate with a structured tannin profile.

18/20 - Matthew Jukes

18/20

In 2017, you will immediately sense extraordinary freshness and lift in this wine. Unlike the swarthy, brooding 2016, the ‘17 shows that the unique maritime climate had control over this wine’s destiny and it calmed the sun’s rays allowing a more expressive side of this vineyard to show itself. Fresh forest fruit notes, a dusting of fertile earth, a scattering of dried herbs, an unlit Cohiba rolled between your fingers and a distant tang of ozone make this an utterly charming wine with uncommon restraint and poise.
