Yarra Yering Underhill Shiraz Yarra Valley 2023 Yarra Valley

$135.00

THE VINEYARD

This remarkable single block of Shiraz was planted in 1973 on a neighbouring property and acquired by Yarra Yering in 1988.

Set on a gentle west-facing slope with clay-based soils, the site is beautifully suited to cool-climate Shiraz. The original clone remains unknown and is unique to this particular block, adding another layer of individuality to the wine.

WINEMAKING

The fruit is hand harvested and carefully sorted before fermentation, using a combination of whole bunches and individual berries.

Half of the vineyard is fermented in a 3,500-litre oak cask, incorporating approximately 10% whole bunches, before being pressed and returned to the same cask for maturation.

The remaining fruit is fermented in small half-tonne open fermenters and hand-plunged twice daily. After pressing, the wine matures for 12 months, with 50% aged in a four-year-old 3,500-litre oak cask and the balance in French oak puncheons, of which only 10% are new.

The restrained use of new oak allows the character of this historic vineyard to remain firmly at the centre of the wine.

THE WINE

A beautifully expressive example of cool-climate Yarra Valley Shiraz.

Mixed berries, floral perfume and graphite emerge from the glass, giving the wine a wonderfully brooding and mysterious character. Beneath the fruit sit layers of cured charcuterie, aniseed, liquorice and subtle smoky oak.

Plum and dark berry fruit provide concentration without heaviness. The palate remains distinctly medium-bodied, driven by purity and freshness, with finely judged oak acting only as a seasoning and a subtle whole-bunch grip adding structure and complexity.

Elegant, savoury and beautifully composed, this is Shiraz built around finesse rather than sheer power.

CELLARING

One of the Yarra Yering wines that can show beautifully relatively early in its life.

It often enters a particularly attractive drinking window between 5 and 10 years, while its proven pedigree and structure allow it to continue developing gracefully for 10+ years when cellared under suitable conditions.
